MULTIPLICATION OF FRACTIONS

How to multiply fractions?
Paano mag-multiply ng hating-bilang (praksyon)?

Follow the steps below in multiplying fractions;

Example (Halimbawa)
1. Multiply the numerator of the first fraction by the numerator of the second fraction.

2. Multiply the denominator of the first fraction by the denominator of the second fraction.

3. Simplify the answer or reduce it to lowest term.
Gawing simple ang sagot o paliitin ang  termino/antas.
To simplify, find the Greatest Common Factor  (GCF) of the numerator and the denominator.
The factors of 6 are 1,2,3 and 6.
The factors of 20 are 1, 2, 4, 5, 10 and 20.
We can see that the GCF of 6 and 20 is 2. Dividing the numerator and the denominator by 2 / 2 will not change the value of the original fraction since 2/2 = 1.

WARNING : The rule of dividing fractions IS NOT THE SAME as multiplying fractions. See the lesson for it.

Subtraction of Fractions with Like Denominators

Subtracting Fractions - Pagbabawas ng Hating-Bilang

There are 3 simple steps to subtract fractions. (Mayroon tatlong hakbang sa pagbabawas ng hating-bilang)

1. Make sure the bottom numbers (the denominators) are the same.

2. Subtract the top numbers (the numerators). Put the answer over the same denominator.

3. Simplify the fraction.
Gawing simple ang hating-bilang.

Example 1:

31
66
Step 1. The bottom numbers are already the same. Go straight to step 2.
Step 2. Subtract the top numbers and put the answer over the same denominator:
3 – 1 = 3 – 1 = 2
6666

Step 3. Simplify the fraction:
